Abandoned Kells signal Box, Co Kerr, Ireland. (1997)
Another plucky survivor, Kells signal box was part of the remote wayside station of the same name on one of the most scenic and spectacular stretches of railway in Ireland, the 39 miles between Farranfore to Valentia Harbour on the Iveagh peninsula, Co Kerry, Ireland. Kells station opened 12th August 1893 and closed to all traffic on the 31st of January 1960.
The signal box has been cosmetically restored in recent years as part of “Kells Heritage Centre and will soon be part of the 27km South Kerry Greenway, which will run from Glenbeigh over Kells Bay to the town of Cahersiveen mostly over the former railway route. It will no doubt be the most spectacular and beautiful walking and cycling greenway when opened Ireland.
