Abandoned Signal Cabin, Ballygluin, Co Galway, Ireland.

View On Black

Ballygluin is now best remembered as the station in the opening scene of John Fordes Irish epic “The Quiet Man”. Ballygluin posed as “Castletown” station as a bemused John Wayne steps from the train, enquiring from curious locals for the way to his ancestorial home of “Innisfree” in the 1952 academy award winning movie.

Ballygluin was opened as part of the Athenry and Tuam Railway in 1860. Ballygluin was also part of the long straggling route of the Waterford, Limerick & Western Railway. The station saw it’s last regular trains in 1975, Part of this 185Km line (Limerick to Athenry) is due to reopen this year after a multi-million euro refurbishment, when it’s the turn of Athenry to Collooney section is now anybody’s guess.
