1965 Rambler Ambassador 990

The senior Ambassador was redesigned for 1965, now with a longer 116" wheelbase and 200" length, being marketed as a full-size with increased passenger and cargo room. Vertical quad headlamps and a V-shaped grille tapered outward were the main feature up front. After being available with standard V8s, the Ambassador was now with a standard six for the first time since 1956 (the new 155 HP "Torque Command" 232 small block), with 287 and 327 V8s optional.

Ambassadors came in both 880 and 990 series. The 880 aimed at Chevy's Bel Air, Ford Custom/Custom 500 and Plymouth Fury I & II. The upmarket near-luxury 990 aimed at the Impala, Galaxie and Fury III with deluxe interior and simulated woodgrain paneling.

The 990 sedan was the top line 4-door and also best selling in the Ambassador line at 24,852 built, factory delivered retail price at $2,608 with standard 232 six ($2,699 V8) (FOB Kenosha or Brampton).
