Lincoln Tunnel, original single tube configuration December 1937-February 1945
The first tube (now center tube) was built between 1934 and 1937 at a cost of $85 million, opened December 22, 1937. The single tube operated in two-way traffic configuration (one lane each direction). The north tube for westbound traffic was included in original plans, however due to the depressed economic condition, the Port Authority decided to build only one tube at first for two-way traffic and proceed with the second when financing was available. The north tube began construction in 1937 (due to be in service 1940), but was partially completed in 1938 and mothballed, with work resuming in 1941. After wartime delays, the north tube was in service February 1, 1945, just weeks before the fall of the Nazi empire.
Dyer Avenue was built as a tunnel access and exit road between 34th and 42nd Streets.
