Ford Falcon EF GLi Sedan (1994)

The Ford EF Falcon was introduced in August 1994. It was a significant facelift of the Ford Falcon (ED), which it replaced. All exterior panels other than the doors were new for the EF, while Fairmont and Fairmont Ghia now had unique frontal styling differentiating them from the Falcon models. An upgraded EF Series II range was introduced in October 1995.

The EF Series also saw the first use of polycarbonate headlight lenses instead of glass, saving weight and gaining shatter resistance.

The EF Falcon was launched shortly after my first visit to Ford Australia Production and Engineering facilities as a student.

This particular EF Falcon was owned by my friend Paul, who purchased it ex-fleet and fairly new. Though I wasn't a big fan of Fords or Falcons, his relatively new car was a big step up from all the crappy old cars that most of my friends and I drove.

At this point in its history, all Falcon models still rode on live rear axles. From a marketing point of view, this was heavily criticised, but in reality, the Falcon rode very well on most Australian road surfaces. It also had incredibly powerful air-conditioning. We did a trip to Gundagai for a mutual friend's 21ist birthday in the middle of summer, and decided to see how cold the car could get if we turned the AC on 'Max' for the entire two hour trip. Despite the external temperature approaching 40 degrees C, we stepped out of the looking somewhat blue and took quite a long time to warm back up to an appropriate body temperature.
