VW Type-3 1500 Sedan (1961)
First, there was the Beetle, and then more Beetles. You know, the one they designed in the 1930s. The car was outdated, and needed replacing. The solution was the Type-3, sharing the platform chassis, but bigger, and wearing more contemporary clothes. First up, in 1961 was a two-door sedan, followed by a 2-door wagon (known in the US as the 'Squareback', and finally, the fastback - again with two doors. Unfortunately for VW, the Beetle still outsold them all.
A total of 2.54 million were built over 13 years - healthy by most manufacturers standards, but the Beetle was selling nearly a million per year through this period.
The Type-3 was in turn replaced by the Type-4 in 1969, and even more ungainly vehicle (though it did now have four-doors), which sold even more poorly. Still, the original Beetle was the mos popular model. It wasn't until the mid-1970s with the launch of the VW Golf, did VW have a viable answer to a successful replacement for the everlasting Bug.
Volkswagen Type-3 1500 Sedan (1961) has been created for Flickr LUGNuts' 120th Build Challenge, - 'Happy 10th Anniversary, LUGNuts', - where all the previous challenge themes are open for use in creating builds for the Challenge.
The Challenge theme chosen is number 53 - 'For the Love of the Bug' - for any vehicle that is related to the VW Beetle/Bug.
