LUGNuts Custom ThunderMad Shooting-Brake Rat-Rod

LUGNuts' 102nd Challenge - 'I Semall a (Modern) Rat' - challenges builders to create a modern Rat-Rod based on a vehicle built after 1996 (less than twenty years old).

Lino says we will all be trend-setters. We will see......

Presented here is the 'ThunderMad' Shooting Brake. This vehicle combines too post-1996 models: The 11th generation Ford Thunderbird Convertible, itself revived as a retrofuturistic model from 2002-2005. The second vehicle, the Volvo C30, a compact 3-door wagon type Coupe-thing, itself recalling the Volvo P1800 SE shooting Brake from the early 1970s.

The ThunderMad name comes as a mashup of 'Thunderbird' and 'Nomad' - the Nomad name given to the 2-door Hardtop wagon versions of the 1955-57 Chevrolet Bel Air, (incidentally coinciding with the production years of the first generation of Thunderbird).

Inspiration for the 21st Century ThunderMad was also provided by the GM study 'Nomad' concept from the 2004 NAIAS:

This concept was built upon the GM Kappa platform, the basis for the Pontiac Solstice, Open Speedster and Saturn Sky.

The 2004 Nomad Concept was pretty cool, and you can see the same thinking (minus the retro references) in the Volvo C30).

ThunderMad ditches the Thunderbird's trunk, whilst mating the Volvo C30 roof, tailgate, and side windows.

Having modelled both the Thunderbird and C30 previously, the two sections joined up remarkably easily, with only small modifications necessary around the rear bumper and the interface along the rear fenders.

The ThunderMad is finished in 'Primer grey', painted rust-coloured F40-alloy wheels, matt-black bonnet/hood and various rust-look trim parts.

Out goes the 3.9 L DOHC V8 (only good for 188 kW), and in goes the MY2013 Mustang Shelby GT500 V8. The new 5.8 L supercharged V8 producing 662 hp (494 kW; 671 PS).

The engine is modified to accommodate a twin-bore inlet protruding from the hood.

This Lego miniland-scale LUGNuts Custom 'ThunderMad' Shooting-Brake Rat-Rod has been created for Flickr LUGNuts' 102nd Build Challenge, titled - 'I Smell a (Modern) Rat!'. In this challenge, any post-1996 vehicle can be built as a rat-rod.
