Chevrolet Caprice PPV - 2015

The end of the B-Body Caprice and Impala SS in 1996 looked to spell the end of the low-cost RWD for GM North America, and with it the lucrative Police business.

Globally however, large RWD cars were still being produced by GM's Australian offshoot - Holden.

Once B-Body Caprice / Impala SS production ceased, Holden commence export of the LWB V-Body derived Caprice (also known as the Statesman in Australia). This car was a long wheelbase, long tail version of the Commodore.

Fast forward to 2006. Holden had just launched the new Zeta-Platform Commodore, with Caprice to come. The Zeta Platform, developed in Australia (GM's Global RWD 'Homeroom'), was to underpin a wide range of GM vehicles globally, under multiple brands. One high-profile success of this program was the 2009 Camaro. Victims were numerous: - Pontiac G8 killed with the extinction of Pontiac. Various undisclosed Buick and Chevrolet models cancelled - though the Zeta Caprice is assembled from CKD in China.

Once GM found its feet, and realised that the PPV market was up for grabs, Detroit had Holden send over LHD LWB Caprices for evaluation, and eventual PPV supply. Joined in 2014 by the Chevrolet SS - a VF-Generation Commodore dressed as a performance RWD Chevrolet.

With the end of Zeta Production late in 2017, the Caprice, SS, and Holden Commodore derivatives will cease.

The Camaro has been transferred to GM's new compact RWD 'Alpha' Platform, while large RWD Cadillacs now ride on the more expensive 'Omega' platform.
