Ferrari 1956 860 Monza Barchetta Racer

Ferrari, known for its V12 race cars, introduced a line of four-cylinder race cars in 1953. The line began with the 2.5 litre Ferrari 625 TF, alongside a 2.9 litre Ferrari 735 S debuting at the Monza race circuit in Italy. The cars did very well, despite the 625s not holding pace on the long Monza straights.

During 1954 (in which the Sportscar Manufacturer's Championship was won by Ferrari), and 1955, the four cylinder sportscars did extremely well. The key protagonist being the 2.0 litre Ferrari 500 Mondial and the 3.0 litre Ferrari 750 Monza. A change to coil-sprung suspension saw the 500 Mondial superseded by the 500 TR (Testarossa), the first Ferrari sportscar to bear this nomenclature.

In 1956 the vehicle was again revised, this time to 3.4 litres for the Ferrari 860 Monza. Also at this time was an increase in wheelbase by 100mm, and the fitment of front coil springs from the 500 TR. The Ferrari 860 Monza, along with the V12 Ferrari 290 MM were able to return the Sportscar World Manufacturer's Championship to Ferrari for the 1956 season.

This miniland-scale Lego Ferrari 860 Monza has been created for Flickr LUGNuts 78th Build Challenge, - 'Place, Everyone!' - featuring vehicles named after place. In this case the Ferrari 860 Monza is named after the race circuit at the Italian city of Monza (home of the modern Formula One race circuit). This is t he circuit where Ferrari debuted its four-cylinder sportscar racers during the 1950s.
