I remember the SS Excella sitting in Prince of Wales Bay for many years as a child, sinking at her moorings more than once. In common with all historic non-sailing vessels in Tasmania, preservation plans failed. She was eventually bought by the owner of the Kettering Hotel and marina to be part of his tourism plan. Unfortunately, she broke her back, seen in these shots, while being dragged onto shore and was eventually dismantled.

Designed by noted Sydney Naval Architect Walter Reeks, she was built about 1908 in Hobart as a motor vessel (very early example) but was repowered within a few years with an asthmatic steam plant from an older ship. Like most Hobart river steamers, she ran most of her life to Channel ports, moving apples to Hobart for export and general cargo as well as to the Tasman Peninsular. Her steam plant still exists somewhere.
