Kerouac Commemorative Park, Lowell

by pitoucat

The city of Lowell, Mass. has honoured its famous son by erecting the Jack Kerouac Commemorative. The memorial was designed by the Texan sculptor Ben Woitena and comprises eight granite columns, each eight foot tall. The triangular structures are sandblasted on two of their faces with passages from Kerouac's books. The outer columns feature the opening paragraphs from the Lowell novels, and also 'On the Road', chosen by the Lowell Historic Preservation Commission. The inner columns have passages from Kerouac's more spiritual, metaphysical works, selected by Woitena himself. Separate images of each of the sixteen inscribed faces are shown in this set. The opening ceremony took place on Saturday, June 25, 1988 and images of some of the visitors that day are also included here.
