3860 - Ramanatha Swamy Temple, Rameswaram
Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram is an ancient one dedicated to Lord Siva.This temple is known for its magnificent structure, long corridors and aestically carved lining pillars. Its corridor is the longest one in Asia. The entrance of the temple is adorned with 38.4 metre high gopuram (tower). The temple was built by rulers of different dynasties from 12th century onwards, but the Sethupathi of Ramanathapuram was the notable king who played a major role in building the temple. Swami Vivekananda offered prayers (Real worship) at this temple in January 1897.
The legend says that hanuman was sent by Lord Rama to bring a Lingam to worship at an appointed auspicious hours .As Hanuman’s arrival was delayed, Sita moulded a Lingam out of sand for Rama’timely worship. The Lingam is the main deity being worshipped at this temple as ‘Ramanathaswamy’. The Lingam brought in by Hanuman was installed at the northern side of the temple.
