Baths of Neptune, Ostia Antica

The large (67 X67 meters) Baths of Neptune at Ostia Antica, Italy were completed in 139 A.D. Modern excavation of the Baths of Neptune at Ostia Antica was begun by the Italian archaeologist Rodolfo Lanciani in 1888 and continued into the early 20th century. In the foreground of the photograph is Room 4 of the baths which connects directly back into the Frigidarium (cold bath). The black & white mosaic floor tiles throughout the chambers and rooms of the baths depict various sea creatures. Room 4 includes the figure of the god Neptune riding in a chariot drawn by four hippocampi which gave the baths their name.
