Tiber Embankment Rome

The Tiber embankment was a flood wall erected in the 19th century through the city of Rome to protect the city from the frequent floods of the Tiber River. The Castel Sant'Angelo shown on the right bank of the Tiber was originally constructed as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian in 139 A.D. The structure was converted to a military fort in 401 A.D. and later vandalized by Visigoth invaders. The building's final transformation was to a castle of the papacy in the 14th century.
