Mayberry 2019 146

Mount Airy, North Carolina, is widely known as the home of actor Andy Griffith and was the model for Mayberry, the setting of The Andy Griffith Show, an iconic TV show that aired in the 1960s.

Today, the spirit of The Andy Griffith Show lives on along Main Street and beyond, as Mount Airy proudly wears its Mayberry identity. The town hosts an annual "Mayberry Days" celebration. Fans of the show can visit Floyd’s City Barber Shop, the Old Mayberry Jail, Snappy Lunch, and Andy’s childhood home. Ford Galaxie police cars, painted to resemble those used on the show, give tours, starting from Wally's Service Station.

The Andy Griffith Museum was founded in 2009 by Emmett Forrest, half a mile from Griffith's childhood home, housing memorabilia from Griffith's entire career. An exhibit in an adjacent gallery showcases Chang and Eng Bunker (1811–1874), Siamese-American conjoined twins joined by a band of cartilage at the chest. They settled in the Mount Airy area, where many of their descendants still live.

These images of Mount Airy/Mayberry were taken September 16, 2019, as well as images from nearby Pilot Mountain (remember references to Mount Pilot?).

These images also include the Whittling Wall, eight sculptures of people made to look like brick, by artist Brad Spencer, that were installed just off Main Street. Six of the sculptures are of notable folks from Mount Airy, including Donna Fargo. The other two sculptures are of a generic whittler and a mill worker. The whittler reflects that the wall has been called "The Whittling Wall" for decades, since men would gather here and whittle while waiting for their wives to finish shopping.
