Miles out of Mecca

The following day we drove past Mecca, down long straight roads lined with groves of immaculately arrayed lemon trees. Here and there we saw columns of pickup trucks with groups of gum-chewing brown skinned men leaning against the dusty fenders, who seemed resigned to wait for some higher power to call on them to start the harvest. The asphalt gave way to silt and stones eventually, and we found ourselves driving through the desert toward a sunscorched mountain range where lay our manifest, our canyon destination.
