The "White Lilacs" House - Cazenovia, NY

Named "White Lilacs" by one of its many owners. This brick house is predominently Greek Revival in design and features cast-iron lintels over its windows and doors. By purchasing directly from the stock of a foundry specializing in architectural ornaments, the builder was able to imitate inexpensively the carved stone details found in Classical buildings. The Federal influence still lingers, however, as demonstrated by the attenuated proportions of the Ionic columns and the balustrade highlighted by urns (no longer extant). It is believed to have been built in or around 1835 to house a banking office. There was originally a wing on the northwest side. The house was remodeled to its present size; an addition was added to the rear wing making the house nearly square in appearance. It has twenty-one rooms, a grand staircase, hardwood floors, multiple fireplaces and ornamental details throughout. It was used as a family residence until 1979 when the home was sold and turned into a luxury office building. The building was up for sale at the time this photo was taken. Located at 9 Albany Street in Cazenovia, NY. (Caz/23)
