Bristol Hill Church - Volney
A closer look at the front of the Bristol Hill Church (Congregational United Church of Christ). Now a little bit of history: The congregation formed in 1812 and began raising funds to build the church in 1831. African Americans Andrew Slater, Isaac Lawson, Amos Mason and his wife donated money, grain, lumber and labor to pay the preacher, build this Federal style church, along with a parsonage, and erect a steeple. During the time of slavery this was one of the many sites in Oswego County that was known by the Underground Railroad as a safe place to hide while waiting escape to Canada. Inside this simple Federal-style church, you can view the original wainscoting woodwork, windows and carved lintel. You also can view actual letters written by slaves that spent time here. The church was proud to have both white and black members, many of whom were in the Freedom Movement. The Federal style church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. It is located on County Route 3, outside of Fulton, in Volney, NY.
