Old House of Providence

I was heading down West Onondaga Street in Syracuse, NY when I went past this marvelous old building. It was absolutely huge in size and I just couldn't really capture it in my photos. Between the trees in front of it and the narrow street I just couldn't get the shot I wanted but I tell you this building must have been exceptional in its day. The air conditioner units in the windows kind of take away from its old time charm but still in all, it is a great old building that definitely needed its photo taken. Today, the Catholic Charities organization is headquartered in this historic building which was once known as the House of Providence. Now a little bit of history: The House of Providence has a history of service, helping those in need, that stretches back nearly one hundred and fifty years and was founded in 1867 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The original structure which housed the first House of Providence was located on Split Rock Road and was destroyed by fire in 1907. Construction of the new House of Providence, the one in this photo, which is on West Onondaga Street, was begun a year later in 1908. It was originally used as a home for senior citizens and later became a residence for orphaned boys. The House of Providence was operated under the care of the St. Vincent dePaul Society in conjunction with the Sisters of Mercy. Catholic Charitiies continues the important work of providing for those in need which was begun at the House of Providence. This building is located at 1654 West Onondaga Street in Syracuse, NY.
