Lock 58 - Newark

This is Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 58. Okay, I have to say this right off, this pains me to see what has happened to this lock-----that it is being used to store scrap metal. But , as they say, it is what it is, I guess. Anyhow, this was a single length double chamber lock built around 1841. The storage building/garage seems to be built into the south chamber. This particular view is looking west at the south chamber. The northern wall of the south chamber can be seen to the right of the building. It is currently the property of a scrap metal company. Back in canal days it was referred to as the Middle Lockville Lock. It is located approximately 1/2 mile east of Lock 59 in Newark, NY just north of Route 31 on Lyons Street.
