Chenango Canal - Oriskany Falls
This is a winter shot of Lock 68 of the Chenango Canal. It was on the north side of Valley Road not too far outside of the village of Oriskany Falls, heading toward Solsville. (I believe there were more locks along this route but unfortunately the weather started to get really bad the day I was up there so I had to cut it short and turn around -- I'll have to return again in early spring). The Chenango Canal opened in 1837, flourished briefly, and closed in 1878. It was 97 miles long and had 116 lift locks. It extended south from the Erie Canal at Utica and went to the Susquehanna River at Binghamton. It was roughly where Routes 12 and 12 B run today.
