Spirit of Life Memorial - Saratoga Springs, NY - 2015

The Spirit of Life Memorial was commissioned by Katrina Trask to honor her late husband, financier, philanthropist and patron of the arts Spencer Trask for his role in preserving the mineral waters of Saratoga. On June 26, 2015, exactly 100 years after the statue was unveiled, the city held a rededication ceremony for the recently restored statue. The sculptor of the bronze statue was Daniel Chester French. The statue is a figure of a draped and winged woman, with her hands poised high above her head. The figure represents Hygieia, the giver of health who usually appeared in Greek and Roman art. The goddes is poised lighty on a rock and a stream of water pours from its cleft. Her left hand holds a pine branch which is Mr. Trask's symbol. In her right hand the figure holds a bowl of healing water which typifies the spirit of awakened life in the waters of the springs. The pedestal is a sculptured reproduction of the tyfaceous deposits seen about the orifice of many of Saratoga's famous springs. It is located in Congress Park in Saratoga Springs, NY. (SS/145)
