Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis)
The Spotted Owl is an iconic symbol of the old-growth forests of western North America. Sadly, its precipitous decline throughout the northern extent of its range is an indicator that these climax ecosystems have been poorly managed. Seeing this Spotted Owl perched next to the trunk of a 200 year-old Douglas-fir culminates the enchantment of these forests. Many thanks to Melissa for sharing this special and rare moment with me.
