THOMAS' TIN SOLDIERS: Flags of the Civil War

by Tom Loback

For 10 or 12 years I sculpted and produced a line of classic Toy Soldiers collectables called THOMAS' TIN SOLDIERS. It including a line of Regimental Flagbearers from the American Civil War.

I did the flags as historically accurately as I could while still keeping a 'toy' look. I sculpted the originals a then they were handpainted by teams of painters.

The part I enjoyed most was researching the flags. During the Civil War a flag, or color, was the heart and soul of its regiment and the combat life of a color bearer during battle was very short.

Many of the flags still exists in various Statehouses. Some have been restored and some continue to be neglected and deteriorate.
