Certainly the land and the rivers to the south have fallen under the wheel of "progress" - the mills and cottages of the Kawarthas, the long history of canals on the Trent and the Severn. To the north, Cottage country has boomed over the lakes of Muskoka and Haliburton, lining the waterways with shacks and palaces. But the land between -the valley of the Black - has so far escaped most such developments."
