Art in traffic signal box in Toronto (2 of 2)

Toronto Artists are turning electrical boxes into things of beauty!

Outside the Box Toronto is an art program as part of the StreetArtToronto Initiative that empowers street artists to have their work legally displayed on property in the City of Toronto.

The city of Toronto is trying to make its streets more beautiful by asking artists to think inside the box.

The city is commissioning local artists to re-imagine the dull grey traffic signal boxes that control lights at intersections and transform them into hand-painted works of art.

The Outside the Box program provides an opportunity for local artists to create works of art on traffic signal boxes across Toronto. Since 2013, over 350 boxes have been hand-painted by local artists, or wrapped featuring designs by local graphic artists, and transformed into extraordinary works of art. Artists and graphic designers applying to this program are encouraged to consider the context of the local area and the city as a whole. Art calls for hand-painted boxes, and graphic designs for wrapped boxes, are issued separately."

The artist fee paid is $650 honorarium (including HST) for each completed traffic signal box.

Thanks for visiting, I will do a series of these boxes soon.
