At the top of the first steep rise we found a giant petrel chick sitting happily in its nest on open ground. We were warned of the dangers of approaching these too closely. If you get close enough to make them uncomfortable, they make a clicking sound with their beak. If you get closer still, there's a projectile-vomiting defense that is lengendary. Apparently the stuff is really sticky, so it's hard to clean off, and it smells terrible.
