PATERSON'S CURSE

An echium from the Mediterranean, it has always grown on these sandhills over the Murray River in New South Wales, but not seen much in Victoria. That was once long ago when there was a Lands Department and vigilance as it is considered a noxious weed to graziers. Now, in the many-layered bureaucracy without communication of much worth, it is spreading. Except for people like my parents, in their eighties, who spend days pulling it out along the roadsides around the farm.
