River Thames: work life balance.

Taken on 1 October 2019 amd uploaded 24 January 2025.

Various vessels moving on the River Thames...a cruise ship, Europa 2, heading up river, probably to a mooring at Tilbury, in which case it is very nearly there. Behind it, a Port of London Authority Pilot cutter, Patrol and a tug, SD Seal: obscuring those, the Gravesend to Tilbury ferry, Thames Swift, I believe on its return to Gravesend. Down river, a cargo ship, Wilson Mersey and finally an anonymous red workboat.

Thames Swift has an interesting if unclear history: I've read that it was built in Gravesend and was previously the Gravesend to Tilbury ferry from 1996 to 2002, as Martin Chuzzlewit. Between 2002 and 2017 the ferry was Duchess M but when the contract to operate the service changed hands, the new contractor brought in the now renamed Thames Swift. It was the principal ferry (I believe) until the service was closed in 2024, sometimes replaced by its fleet-mate Jacob Marley.

The ferry service operated 6 days a week, first sailing 05.40am, final sailing 7.15pm. A long day.
