Shornemead Fort: iron ring

Part of the 'fittings' at the ruin of Shornemead Fort, a few miles east of Gravesend on the south bank of the River Thames.
It's fixed to the base of one of the gun 'embrasures'; I don't know its purpose. The fort was destroyed by the British Army after WW2 apart from its facade, the most massively built and engineered part of the fort (the facade would have faced enemy fire, after all) - granite, concrete, iron...
