Chirpy Chippie

De Havilland (Canada) DHC-1 Chipmunk 22 'WK577' aka G-BCYM crossing the River Adur on short finals to Shoreham's Runway 25.

With c/n C1/0598 and built in 1950 the 'Chippie' was the basic trainer used by the RAF, the RCAF and many other countries for 30 years or more.

Back in the late 60's and early 1970's I used to fly in these lovely old aeroplanes with the Air Training Corps. We had regular Air Experience Flights from here at Shoreham or down at (the now long-gone) Hamble Airfield on the Solent near Southampton and also when at various ATC summer camps at such illustrious venues as, RAF Coltishall (Lightnings), RAF Scampton (Vulcans), RAF Shawbury (Vampires) and also from the MU at RAF Bicester where AEF based Chipmunks would fly daily, giving us young Cadets a taste of what aerobatics were like. Fabulous stuff!
