To boldly go

'V' Bomber Avro Vulcan B.2 XJ780 displaying at the Shoreham Airshow, 26th June 1977.

Back then both the Vulcan and Victor were still operational with the Royal Air Force as our primary Bomber and Aerial Tanker force respectively.

Along with the Valiant, the Vulcan and Victor were all conceived during the 'Cold War', capable of dropping a Nuclear bomb on Moscow.

The Valiant was withdrawn in the mid 1960's after suffering metal fatigue issues but the Vulcan soldiered on as our primary Strategic attack bomber, with the Victor swapping roles becoming our designated Tanker fleet until the advent and introuduction of the VC-10.

The Vulcan came to the end of it's service life in the early '80's but not before performing it's swansong during the Falklands War of 1982 by bombing the runway at Port Stanley - the famous 'Black Buck' series of raids.

Only one 'flying' Vulcan survives today - XH558 which it is hoped will be back in the air again for this year's show season.
