As it's name suggest, the Trident family generally had three engines, but the 3B actually had four! It was fitted with an RB.162 booster engine which gave it a much needed extra 15% of thrust on take-off
117 Tridents were sold to a handful of operators where the type enjoyed reasonable success until new noise regulations dictated costly modifications
Inevitably the cost implications of such 'mods' were not viable and the Trident was retired from BEA in 1985 with the type finally retired from Chinese operations a decade later
