RNAS Lee-on-Solent based Royal Navy Westland Whirlwind HAR.9 coded 'LS12' seen dropping by Shoreham Airport sometime in the 1970's

Apart from their 'service' duties, Lee's Whirlwinds and their subsequent Wessex choppers provided SAR facilities all along the Eastern part of the South Coast and were regulars either in and out of Shoreham for fuel or casualty drop-off, or simply making low fly-by's

Originally, the SAR coverage was shared with their RAF counterparts out of the base at Thorney Island and Manston but when the latter closed it was down to just the Kent based RAF choppers.

All are long gone now with Bristow Helicopters providing such cover under the banner of the HM Coast Guard initially with Sikorsky S-61N's but now flying Leonardo AW.159's and elsewhere, the larger Sikorsky S-92's
