Shocking
Toting twin missiles Swedish Air Force F13 Wing Saab JA-37 Viggen 37319/59 sears the air with her afterburner shockwaves as she blasts away from Farnborough's runway during the 1982 SBAC Air show.
In the event of war Viggens were designed to be operated not only from airfields but also highways and forest roads, a unique tandem-wheeled main undercarriage and that double delta wing giving them 'short-field' performance and agility.
Two single seaters attended that year - with this one performing the Viggen's characteristic role demo - burning away after an incredibly short take-off, fast and furious passes against the murky skies and then on landing stopping short with full reverse thrust and reversing off to the edge of the runway to 'park' - simulating it's off-airfield capabilities.
Now retired from service and replaced by the Gripen, the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight still keeps one airworthy - visiting these shores during recent Airshow seasons.
