Mimbres pottery is made by hand; no wheel or turning device or puki was used. The body of the vessel was built up with coiled ropes of clay. A sherd or gourd tool was used to scrape the coils to produce a smooth surface. After the vessel was dry a white kaolin clay slip was applied. Then the design was painted on with an iron-based mineral paint with a plant-based binder.
