Heraldic Flask

Bohemia, probably Kronstadt, enameled by Ignaz Preissler, 1720-1730

 

This flask, which bears the arms of the Loen von Anhalt-Dernstedt family of Saxony-Anhalt, probably belonged to a set. It is inscribed, "We drink in the Palatine way so that not a drop is left from which a fly could quench its thirst." The image of a young Bacchus is painted after a print by Jost Amman (1539-1591).
