Ancient Celtic fortress and Gallo-Roman, Brigueuil was fortified in the Middle Ages by the Rochechouart. The town still has defensive gates (gates of Pont Levis, Toll gate of the twelfth century), drilled loopholes buildings, fragments of walls and a fortified church Dedicated to Saint-Martial, it is all golden and granite its first foundations date back to around one thousand. Built in Latin cross, it stands in the village with its 35 meters long. Consisting of a nave preceded by a sort of porch under the tower, it has a transept and a square choir. The aisles have three spans supported by columns and rectangular pilasters. To see in the cemetery lantern of the dead (twelfth century), symbol of the immortality of the soul.
Religious Heritage
The parish church of Saint-Martial, built at the end of the twelfth century and rebuilt in the fifteenth century.
It contains the funereal recess of Marguerite Chabot Marguerite Chabot, wife of Viscount Brigueuil, and of
Pierre de Reilhac, who died in 1503 and a tombstone dating from 1682.
