History
Naarden was once an impregnable defense post to defend the entrance to the rich province of Holland and the trading city of Amsterdam against a foe. The fortress of six bastions earth-covered walls, underground bunkers with artillery cellars, the fortress islands in the moat and the double-canals is strategically located between the IJsselmeer to the north lake of Naarden and the lake on the southwestern side. Over the centuries there more times and fought to Naarden. So the city was taken during the 80-year war by the Spanish.
In 1672 took the French King Louis the 14th in the city and needed after a brief but intense siege chased. Napoleon also saw good prospects in the strong fortress and camped troops there. Who refused in 1813 to transfer the city to Dutch army and a three-quarter-year battle to Naarden was the result.
