The building is located at the foot of the Cathedral of Saint Etienne. Granite, U-shaped, it is accompanied by two entrance pavilions and an orangery. The chapel, in a wing, has retained much of its interior decor of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Housed in the former Bishop's Palace in 1912, the museum houses various collections related to the history, culture and influence of Limoges, but also collections of sculptures, paintings and drawings, including the historic city funds, which adorned public buildings (including the former city halls). These funds formed the beginnings of the municipal museum in the first half of the nineteenth century. It is for this reason the Museum of Fine Arts in the city.
The museum received before closing restructuring on average 70,000 visitors per annum, a figure expected to increase significantly during the full reopening of the facility after expansion and renovation (2006-2010). The various collections, including painting, sculpture, and Egyptian antiquities now indeed benefit from permanent exhibition much larger spaces. Besides the creation of childcare facilities and a very nice and comfortable showroom enable this institution to fully assume its place among the great museums of central and southwestern France.
