2011-08-14 Guitinières, Church of Saint-Romain, Charente Maritime, Poitou Charente w04

The church is a beautiful building Guitinières twelfth century built on a Latin cross plan and has maintained a consistent character despite late interventions.

It is fortified with XV and XVI centuries as evidenced by the large side walls crowned with battlements forming an upper room to the bell tower.

The bell tower was mangled partly rebuilt. He still kept engaged columns and bands of chevrons Romanesque. The current south chapel completely rebuilt in the eighteenth century replaced the Romanesque arch up like that communicates with the nave. The north chapel is a creation of the Gothic period.

The peculiarity of the church lies in the Guitinière carved decoration tells a page in the history of Roman art.

Even if the characters have a head summarily drawn, their appearance is quite elegant, with finely worked dresses. It should be noted in this regard one of the capitals where the double-faced character cache foliage. He is dressed in a robe flared sticky armholes and framed by two monsters.

The bedside of the most remarkable for its disposal of its two superimposed orders arches, despite offers mutilation suffered by a tent, and a cornice carved mordillons. The big deals with the theme of lions. Backed, the teeth bared, they are caught in foliage. Their tails curl and foliage are eaten by an animal.

As bedside portal character, but partially worn mainly consists of repeating geometric patterns archaic intersecting circles, stars, interlacing ...

On the whole, the less polished sculpture resembles that of the church of St. Eutropius at Saintes.

It seems that the sculptor Guitinière is he who has worked on the church Salignac-de-Mirambeau.
