Choir

The sanctuary in the interior clearly shows two phases: While the lower, late Romanesque part erected in the late 12th century, gallery and clerestory were rebuilt after the earthquake of 1356 in the Gothic style again. Already in 1363 the presbytery was restored. Baumeister John Parler of Gmünd is considered the architect of the reconstruction of the Basel Cathedral.

The late Romanesque capitals (1180/1200) show scenes from the biblical story and from the Germanic and ancient mythology.

From left to right: 1. Fall and Alexander gripping drive, 2. Dietrich von Bern and Sintram, 3. Pyramus and Thisbe, 4. Abraham sacrifices Isaac, threat of evil, Abraham with the blessed in the womb.
