2015-04-30 Basler Münster, Schweiz DSC1296
The facade of the north-eastern choir, Romanesque in the lower part, is rich in sculptural decoration. These include grotesque figures, half-beings and elephants (Ilpen), which never got the stonemasons of that time to face. The base area of the choir is circumscribed by a diaphragm arch series. The choir from Basel Cathedral is to the northeast and to the east is not usual, as in the Christian religious buildings. The cathedral has a polygonal ambulatory with low loft and a high clerestory. On the side of the clerestory the stumps of the former choir flanking towers can be seen. This collapsed in the earthquake in 1356 and was never rebuilt. The massive projecting buttresses of the cathedral choir and relieves the leaves arches open for the passage below.
