On the south side of the cathedral is the double cloister. The little cloister was built between 1467 and the end of the 1480s. In the northwest corner is decorated with a figure (St. Catherine with wheel) the capstone. The Big Cloister was added from 1429 to 1462 in late Gothic style. A hall connects both cloisters together. About this hall is the non-public Münster hall where formerly was the library of the Council of Basle. The hall served as the bishop Verkündigungsort against the citizenry and as of court. So here was a bishop's throne.

In large cloister illuminate large Gothic tracery window the west wing of the vault, which is equipped with a network of ribs and colorful keystones. The Big cloister is considered the most elegant and decorative art in Switzerland with outstanding examples of the late Gothic stone carving. The walls are covered with numerous ornate grave slabs. Among them are the tombs of many important Basler such. As that of the humanist Thomas Platter (1499-1582), the mayor Rudolf Wettstein (1594-1666), the mathematician Jakob Bernoulli (1655-1705) and the philosopher Isaak Iselin (1728 -1782). Even the epitaph of who fled Württemberg chancellor Jakob Löffler is located here. At the entrance to the cloister is a statue of the reformer Johannes Oecolampadius.
