2008-10-19 Saint-Aulais-La Chapelle-Conzac, église Saint-Jacques, Charente, Poitou-Charentes 02-2s

It was one of the first Romanesque churches I visit. We got the key somewhere. I found it a little magic box.

The church of Saint Jacques de Conzac dates from the twelfth century. It is a relay to the pilgrims on the road to Saint Jacques de Compostella, from which it derives its name. Historic monument in 1962, it was restored by the Fine Arts. The wood frame above the nave dates from the seventeenth century. It was rebuilt after the Hundred Years War. Inside, a line beam supports slightly pointed arches. Below, an open drum of four bays - very rare feature in Charente - illuminates the transept. Outside, elegant arches rise under a hipped roof. On the ground floor, an arcade adorns the apse wall while above, large windows let in light to highlight the sculpture of the capitals. At the bedside, the foothills were in the form of columns.

The capitals at the top of the square of the transept and choir are richly decorated and probably of Eastern inspiration. One notes neat and rustic surroundings that make the course enjoyable and soothing.
