Observing the Observatory II
On several occasions over recent years whilst driving between Alnwick and Longhoughton I've glanced up at the old observatory on Ratcheugh Crag and thought 'that looks interesting, I'll have to get up there one day and see it at close hand'. I finally made the effort last year, got half-way there and found the bridleway closed. Three weeks ago I tried again.
From below it looks quite craggy and atmospheric and I fully expected to find some sprawling ruin, neglected by the modern world and evocative of its time. Instead, what you see from the road is just about all you get... and what's more it's rather twee and sterile. It would probably look better with a decent sunset behind it.
