Monks by Kandy

Desaturated monks

While walking by the holy lake in Kandy I saw two monks coming towards me with umbrellas in their hands. The contrast between them and the passersbys were so strong that the way I processed this photo is the way it seemed to me while I saw them. I immediately got a photo in my head and sped up so that I’d be able to catch them when they had the filtering light of the tree falling over them. There’s something about monks that fascinate me, not just their philosophy which is close to mine but also the minimalistic way they dress and groom themselves. For me it’s just as Ansell Adams said about B&W photography, you take away all the colors and other things that distract the eye and you’re left with the essence of the moment.

Kandy is a beautiful place and has always been one of my favorite places in Sri Lanka, the climate being a bit cooler than by the coast. It reminds me a lot about the best summer weather in the world, which is Sweden in jun-aug, only problem is that we usually don’t get more than 10 perfect days per year, but those days mmm ; ) Most people know of Kandy because they have the tooth relic of The Buddha there and also because of Esala Perrahera in aug when they have a huge procession and carry a replica of the tooth on the islands biggest elephant. Truly a spellbinding place.

Air raid

A little side note to the posts I did this weekend with the air raids here I Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankans shot down two small airplanes this Saturday, one close to the airport and one inside Colombo. The Sri Lankan newspaper calls it a success and praises the Lankan forces and the Tamil network has apparently posted on their webpage that the mission of the planes were a success. Then when you read on the comments to the Lankan newspapers you see the paranoia of the people over here with comments saying that the UN, US, World Bank and probably even “Band-Aid” is behind it and is supporting the Tamils because they complain that Sri Lanka is breaking the human rights laws. Nobody ever meets the allegations but simply state that they have the right to do what’s necessary.
