Anna in Sari

Explored# 160

I met Anna in the botanical gardens outside Kandy in Sri Lanka late summer 2008. It was one of those serendipitous meetings that changed the course of my travels, and life. We met only a short moment before I was going to a two week retreat in the temple, but again by chance we met up on the south coast and ended up traveling Sri Lanka for two weeks together. Anna was also on a long journey from home and the more time we spent together the closer we got. After Sri Lanka she left for Thailand and we weren’t sure if we’d ever see each other again. But when she was ending her journey with a two months stay in India, we decided to go for another adventure together.

It turned out to be one of the best times I’ve had so far on my trip. Granted it was difficult at times since we had both traveled alone for almost a year, and getting used to having someone else around you took some time. But even though we did get on each other’s nerves from time to time we were perfect for traveling together and it was nice to have someone who watched my back, and also to have someone to take care of. I do enjoy traveling by myself since the company is always good ; ) But traveling with her was different and opened me up to so many things that I would have never seen or experienced otherwise.

It was with tears in our eyes that we finally went separate ways. After two months in India, having managed to get caught up in the middle of the terrorist strikes of Mumbai, being exposed to E coli to the point where Anna had to go to the hospital and get fluids intravenously, and during all of this we saw some of the best India had to offer. The Sikhs offering free food in the Golden temple, magical evenings in Udaipur and spiritual journeys in McLeoid. I don’t know if I’ll ever meet her again but I know I’ll always remember all the adventures we had together :,)

This particular photo was taken on the rooftop of our hotel in Jaipur. Anna had bought a Sari and looked even more stunningly beautiful than usual. She doesn’t like posing for the camera, even though she looks like a model, but I didn’t really give her any choice which turned out to be fortunate. I’ve got a whole series of beautiful shots from that day and she really does look good in a sari!
