BELL PHOTOGRAPHS
In 1990 at the Crest house in San Diego I made a series of bells in hopes to creating a product line I could peddle. High pressure gas cylinders that failed the hydrostatic test at Airgas were sold to me for scrap. Four out of ten lost their beautiful ring tone and had to be discarded. Cast iron rings, steel spheres, and steel split rings were purchased from a wrought iron supply house became the crown work, and were welded with nickel 99 SMAW electrode. Bells were commercially blackened but the finish, though initially a beautiful blue black faded back to original steel rust patina. Waxing that patina turned out to be a serviceable surface treatment.
Sold a few. Traded a few. Gave a few away. Am left with three you see in the other photos. Originally inspired by the Tom Torrens commercial art bells.
