A Golden Opportunity

I had not taken a picture in MN since leaving 5 years ago. This vacation though, I brought the camera in case there was something worthwhile. Since I spend most of my fall vacation up the shore, when we got to Silver Bay it was right around the time the 1100 train should be arriving if it ran. I went up to the lookout spot to survey the yard and didn't see any loads. A good sign perhaps. I then checked out the new (to me) walking trail that parallels the yard. Sure enough as soon as we got down there, the loads had just pulled in. In a funny twist of fate, the whole day I had been hoping for a trio of gray units, but knowing that shooting those is like finding a needle in a haystack, I resigned myself to the fact it was going to be an ACe-70M pair. If the ugly black thing was leading back, I was going to abandon this plan altogether. Imagine my shock when the trio of gray 40's rolled by headed back west! While the colors weren't quite peak, they were pretty damn good. Thus, I took my first train picture in MN in 5 years. I'm glad I did. Finally, it wouldn't be an NSM train without the headlights being off!
